Here in the U.S. more and more people are choosing to buy
American made products to support their local merchants and communities. Not only are these products usually of superior quality, it is so much easier for the customer to deal with a
local merchant when they can talk to a supplier or person who understands their problem, needs, and requirements. And, when dealing with an online merchant, survey after survey shows that customers feel so much more comfortable when they can talk to a customer service representative who speaks their language.
Some might suggest that items purchased in a big box store are much cheaper, but when you compare quality, it's a no-brainer! The old saying that you get what you pay for really holds true in most cases. Cheaper definitely isn't always better!
For example: A very popular item you can find at a big box store which is often imported is a wooden
cheese slicer with a
wire cutter. You use it for a short time and either the wire breaks, or if it's made of simulated wood, compressed board or similar material, it falls apart or the wire breaks. Why does this happen? Because the wire used on the imported item is usually very thin and cheap and breaks easily. That's why they give you a few extra. If it's made out of wood veneer, Bamboo or compressed board which is often the case, the
cheese slicer warps or comes apart. These types of materials do not hold up to wear and tear over the years.
Wooden
cheese slicers that have been
handcrafted in the U.S.A. are not only made out of one
or more beautiful pieces of hardwood, but will last over the years. Such is the case with
Cheese Slicers purchased from
Woodcraft by G . This one is particularly unique:
After reading through their descriptions, it is easy to see why these cheese boards are not only beautiful, but would stand up for years if properly cared for. The wires used in the cutter are made of U.S. steel.
Their products are handcrafted one at a time making each one unique and a little different. This merchant also offers cutting boards, wooden keepsake boxes and wall art to name a few.
There are also many American artisans to be found on a site called
Etsy. Everything from soup to nuts can be found there all
handcrafted by artisans who stand by their products.
When traveling through China several years ago, one of the things I heard over and over is how much the locals wanted to purchase
American made jeans and other items
made in America. Their explanation was all about quality. Items
made in America have always been thought of as very high quality throughout the world.
So look around your local community and check out your merchants. In my own town, we have several artisans that make beautiful things such as: The Soap Lady who makes healthy, beautiful soaps in all shapes and sizes and another that makes ceramic dishes all hand painted. At our local Farmer's Market there are many growers of local vegetables, bakers and cheese makers. Also, check out the
craft shows that come to your area. You're likely to find something very special!
The economy will suffer less when you
support your local merchants. You may pay a little more than those found at the big box stores, but chances are they will be far superior in quality. And don't forget your local online merchants. Love those items
